Found in My Garden

Something about this time of year always brings me a renewed interest in the art forms of haiku and ikebana. Perhaps it is the sparse yet elegant design of late winter/early spring? And I love using elements of "Found Art" in my projects. Very inspiring and another way to connect to nature when the weather is inclement.

In my Bible reading today I found a very appropriate section:

King James Version: 1 Thessalonians Chapter 5
12. And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you,
and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;
13. And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake.
And be at peace among yourselves.

Archbishop Sartain was at St James today for a historic Anniversary Celebration. On January 23, 1851 Bishop Blanchet installed the Eucharist in the first Saint James Church.

The Archbishop gave a very nice homily and a special talk at the end of mass to the children present. He invited them to give serious thought to God’s call for vocation.

At the reception I snapped a couple of pictures of some of my nieces and nephews with the Archbishop. I thanked him for the nice note he had written in response to my December letter which included one of Kika’s poems. The prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Later he made a point to go over and speak to her personally and told her that he had placed her poem card next to his statue of Juan Diego.

San Juan Deigo pray for us.

Opened my mail and was excited to see a letter from the Archbishop in response to my Dec letter to him. It included a nice personal note of appreciation for my sister’s poem/prayer to Our Lady of Guadelupe.

Our Lady of Guadalupe

This poem is by my sister, Kika.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE,
PRAY FOR US.
LIKE YOU DID FOR JUAN DIEGO,
FILL OUR WINTER NOW WITH ROSES.
YOU TUCKED THOSE TOKENS INTO HIS CLOAK
AND SENT JUAN TO HIS BISHOP TO LET THEM FALL.
GRANT OUR BISHOP, TOO, THAT VISION
OF THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS,
AND RELEASE SUCH FLOODS OF GRACES
AS CAN’T HELP BUT CHANGE THE WORLD.

Mixed Media, Acrylic on Canvas

This mixed media, acrylic on canvas, with papier mache edges is from the 1980s. I enjoyed this experiment and really like the colors. I will be very interested to see how it holds up over time. I have no formal art training so this piece is made up from craft store acrylic paint and I did not use any varnish or anything to finish it so I anticipate it will not last for a very long time before it starts deteriorating. But it was lots of fun to paint and I was pleased to be recycling an old canvas that I bought at a rummage sale.
